OSCE Changes in 2021

There are some important OSCE Changes in 2021. For Instance, This Summer the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), brought some amendments to upgrade their new standards for nurses and midwives in the NMC test of competence part 2 OSCE.

What’s changing?
  • NMC has increased the total number of exam stations from 6 to 10.
  • Four stations will continue to be linked around a scenario: ‘For Instance’ the APIE (one station for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation).
  • It will test six skill stations instead of two.
  • *2 pairs of 2 skills.
  • *1 professional values.
  • *1 critical appraisal.
Time limit:
  • Assessment: 20 min.
  • Planning: 14 min.
  • Implementation: 16 min.
  • Evaluation: 14 min.
  • Finally, The time duration for all the skills will be 16 minutes.
APIE stations 

Firstly, Assessment: Full A-E assessment (airway, breathing, circulation, disability, exposure) will be included in clinical assessment.
Secondly, Planning: Stays the same- writing two care plans
Thirdly, Implementation: Stays the same–drug administration
Evaluation: Changes from a written referral to another healthcare professional to a non-assessed written SBAR assessment, and an assessed verbal handover to another healthcare professional (the examiner).

  • Hernia
  • Asthma
  • Chronic Cardiac Failure
  •  Ectopic
  •  Dementia / Confusion
  •  Leg ulcer
  • Finally, Diabetes

SKILL Stations
Furthermore, OSCE Changes in 2021 have brought 15 Skills and out of that 10 Skills is going to be for OSCE.

  • Administration of Inhaled Medication
  • Blood Glucose Monitoring
  • Catheter Specimen of urine
  • Fine Bore NG
  •  Fluid Balance ( 4 different patient variants)
  •  In-hospital Resuscitation (no defib)
  •  Intramuscular injection
  •  IV flush and VIP score
  •  Pain Assessment
  • Peak Expiratory Flow rate
  • Pressure Area Assessment
  •  Removal of Urinary Catheter
  •  Subcutaneous injection
  •  Urine Analysis
  •  Finally, Wound Assessment and Aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT)

When is the new test-launching?
Above all, Study Materials will start from April 2021 onwards the new Test of Competence.
Therefore, supporting materials will be available in advance from the learning platforms held by each of the Test Centres in the new year.

Similarly, detailed 2021 OSCE materials with videos and effectively explained supporting materials will be released in February by Mentor Merlin.
